Pour Résumer, nous avons passé de SUPERBES VACANCES ………. Calmes et reposantes, pédestres ou à scooter avec une mention spéciale à Yannis pour son cours de pilotage à Elvire. Une végétation étonnante dans des paysages aussi beaux qu’escarpés et le tout bordé d’une mer d’un bleu profond. Loin des sentiers touristiques de masses, nous avons trouvé à Andros de quoi aimer paresser, perdre notre temps, lire et nous baigner et aller à la rencontre des autres.

Thank you to Yannis and Caroline for such a pleasant stay in Andros. We loved The location, especially the view of the valley and the fields from our balcony! the apartment was a great place for us to base ourselves whilst exploring the island during the day. Bonjour, Nous avons séjourné un long week end en juin 2013 dans cette île d'Andros, hébergés par Caroline et Yannis. Nous avons apprécié leur accueil et le studio particulièrement confortable dans lequel nous avons été logés. Cette île nous a séduit par sa beauté, son calme, sa végétation et ses eaux douces ou salées… De belles plages nous ont permis de nous adonner à la natation et de profiter d'un soleil qui fut réparateur, en particulier pour nous français, bien touchés cette année dans l'hexagone par les pluies et le froid. Wonderful experience. We went to secluded beaches. The north coast of Andros is gorgeous. Drinks were provided . The skipper even took us to a small beach we asked for and showed us Chora from different perspectives. A unique experience.
Andros is an island with a rich variety of birds, exceeding 100 species. Among them, some species are permanent residents, while others are migratory, visiting the island during their migration or staying to breed. Among the birds that attract interest is the falconeleonore, a species that migrates from Madagascar to Andros and breeds on the island's islands. Also, the bald eagle, the cormorant and the seagull belong to the protected species and are found on the island of Andros.

Visit Andros or Hora - andros best things to do
Hora (also named “Andros”, like the island) is the island’s capital. It’s clearly the village you have to visit in Andros!
You won’t find here the typical white washed houses with blue shutters. In Hora, most houses were built in a neoclassical architecture with red tiles roofs.
When visiting Hora, wander in the main street, starting from the upper city. On this pedestrian street paved with marble, you will enjoy many shops and typical Greek taverns. Don’t miss Kairi Square, a nice shaded square with a large marble fountain. It’s a great place to have a drink on a terrace.
Follow the main street to arrive at the seaside. There, you will see the remains of an ancient Venetian Castle from the 13th century, built on a small rock. With its small broken stone bridge, it’s a lovely place to take pictures.
In Hora, you can also visit 2 great museums:
The Archaeological Museum, and its collection of ancient objects discovered on the island, mostly in Zagora and Paleopolis.
The Museum of Contemporary Arts, or MOCA: there, you will enjoy modern sculptures from famous Greek artists, and great painting exhibits.
If you’re a bicycle lover or a hiker, then Andros is the perfect island for you.
There are many marked trails on the island. Andros was awarded as a “Leading quality Trails – Best of Europe” destination, meaning that it’s one of the best places to hike in Europe.
You can walk on many trails or ride on dirty roads.
There are numerous itineraries you can follow during your hikes in Andros. Here are some of the island’s best hikes:
Hora – Lamyria – Menites – Monastery of Panachrantos: during this hike, you will discover one of the island’s most beautiful monasteries.
Hora – Apikia – Vourkoti – A 6.8 km-long walk, lasting around 2h30.
Hora – Sineti – Dipotama – Kohylou – Korthi: enjoy the lush vegetation of the Dipotama gorges!
Vourkoti – Moni Agios Nikolaos – Achla Beach, a splendid hike: you will see a beautiful monastery and end your walk at one of Andros’ best beaches.
Boat trips are for sure one of the best things to do during your holidays in Andros.
Most cruises are starting from Chora . It’s clearly the best way to access remote beaches you can’t reach by car, go snorkeling and enjoy the island’s beautiful landscape!
During this cruises, you can discover the island and its many beaches. You can also choose a cruise at sunset, to admire it from the boat.

An important note: some of Andros’ best beaches are only accessible by 4WD, on foot or by boat. For example, the beaches of Achla, RozouVori,Lefka,Vitali or Zorkos, located North East of Hora, can’t be reached by car but the best way is with a boat.
Dipotamata in Andros island, is a river-basin of extreme natural beauty, with a length of about 7 kilometers, in the south-east side of the island, between Syneti, Paleokastro and Kochylou. Water these days is less, but even in drought times it doesn't stop. The natural environment is unspoiled, since the traffic has stopped since the last 35 years.
As a consequence the vegetation is very thick (oleanders, mulberry-trees, fig-trees, oak-trees, bushes, reeds, rushes, blackberries, mint, osiers, ivies). The whole area is a shelter for a variety of animals, such as weasels, badgers, hares, snakes and birds (partridges mainly).
The gorge is crossed by a wide slated cobbled road (the only road connecting Korthi with Chora till 1950). In the intersecting point with the river, there is an arch-shaped bridge and occasionally small fountains.
There are also other narrow step-like paths connecting the other villages of the area with the fields and the water mills. In good condition there are also (apart from the paths, the stone-walls, the water-mills and their auxiliary constructions) sheep-cotes, stables, lodgings, barns, threshing floors and country churches. But the most important structures of the area are the water-mills.
Andros dipotamata
The reason that in Dipotamata was built a large number of water-mills, was the particularly favourable conditions for establishing and operating them: plenty of running water, good access through the paths, protected environment, small distance from villages, etc. Today can be seen (in good condition, in ruins or in traces) 22 water-mills in all the gorge. Most of them are in very good shape. In a few of them there are neighbouring or adjacent auxiliary buildings, such as a room for the miller to spend the night, sheep-cote, stable or store room.
Hydraulic works of big importance and extent for the time and its technological level were supplying and often netting the water-mills. In narrow places of the gorge there were dams, which were forming lakes, to collect water for watering purposes and the functioning of the water-mills. From there, canals were guiding the water in the millpond and eventually into the hole of the machinery of the mill. The remaining water and water coming out of the mill (having rotated its wheel) was guided to the canal of the next water-mill.

Andros excursion in Achla : Everyone was on time and ready to go on a boat...Andros excursion . After a quick theoretical lesson, adventure can now begin! First we stop at the rock of Theotokos and we see the famous Mavropetritis hawk and then we visit at Vori beach... At the end we go to the magnificent beach of Axla! Really fast we secure the boats ,we fix the tents, the fire lit and the evening ran deliciously over a good meal to the fire, and then ended on a few notes of guitar and songs shared on the corner of fire.If you want to visit Achla beach with our boats ,always you can call us.

Bike in Andros. One of my favorite tracks is Prophet Ilias above Pitrofo . This road by bicycle is one of the most beautiful because it has all the elements that make it exciting ...Starting with good company, from the river near Nimporio beach and go to the cross of Mesaria, you understand the ride will have enough soil ... The on road start from there (Mesaria) and reaches up to Pitrofos where it has another cross for Ano Pitrofos where you make left (about 5 km) .After that you will come back on road just before the Stayropeda,! Then just before Stavropeda you make right for the off-road part to climb at the church of Profitis Ilias. This is the most difficult and most beautiful point of the track, because of the large slope and especially in finishing just before the Church, makes you feel proud that you can climb this! The icing on the cake comes at the end of this off-road track (6-7 km) we are doing right and catch a wild and unfortunate path which comes out on Strapouries ...
A path approximately 4 hours 30 km. overall, total climbing 884 m.(Maximum altitude 652m.), very close to the town of Andros with incredible views! Anyone who wants more information, GPS maps, etc ... I will be happy to help!

Andros : The Castle of Faneromenis in Andros was build from the Venetians, north from Korthi, in altitude around 600 m. It could protect one thousand people and it was considered impenetrable because of the high rocks that surround it. According to the legend, the Turks, that could not occupy it, sent in the castle a old woman with her pregnant girl to ask for help, however the evening the old woman opened the gate of the castle, and entered the Turks that slaughtered all the people. After that the old woman, regretted for her action, went up in a tall rock and jump in the sea. Today if you reach the castle from a path from Kochilou, you will see that exist ruins from homes and churches, and the church of Faneromenis. The most important thing to see is the fantastic view in light blue Aegean.

The name comes from the Arabic name ALLOEH. Pharmaceutical attributes of Aloe. Purgative: The yellow bitter juice that comes out when you cut the leaves, it is used as purge. The Holy Skull and Icon of St. Panteleimon the Greatmartyr and Unmercenary, Panachrantou Monastery, Andros, Greece

The Panachrantos Monastery of Andros (also Monastery of St. Panteleimon) is located on the Greek island of Andros in the Aegean Sea, an island of the Cyclades. "Panachrantos" refers to the monastery's dedication to the "Immaculate" Theotokos. The monastery celebrates July 27 and August 15.
The establishment of the monastery is attributed to Stragegos (General) Nicephorus II Phocas in the tenth century, who subsequently became emperor of the Eastern Roman empire (ruled 963 to 969). By legend, two monks, promising to pray for his victory, asked Nikephoros for financial aid when he stopped on the island on his way to battle in Crete. He agreed and promised aid for them to build a monastery provided he was victorious. With his victory, he fulfilled his promise.
Panachrantos Monastery Andros Greece
The monastery is located in the Geronakas mountainous area high on the side of Mount Katafigio at an elevation of about 2,500 feet (750 meters). Surrounded by a strong wall, the monastery appears like a "Byzantine" fortress. The site provides an exceptional view of Chora and the surrounding area.
According to tradition, the monastery was built in a place shown by the icon of the Holy Mother (Panachrantos). The icon is attributed to St. Luke. The icon is still kept at the monastery on a stand next to the southern door to the altar of the main church of the monastery. This monastery also possesses the relic skull of St. Panteleimon. The relic and an icon of Panteleimon stand next the Panachrantos and are the pride of the monastery as well as the island of Andros.

Vori beach is as a small paradise. It a little way from Chora – Andros but you can go easily with a boat. The aquamarine waters are incredibly diaphanous and it’s a very quit place! It is ideal beach to explore the bottom of the sea, and if you are lucky can you see until marine turtles! Behind the rocks, near Vori you will find a impressive shipwreck (from 1996 ) . The valley of Vori is green all around because of a river that crosses the beach, and for this reason is not particularly infrequent you see small turtles around. A fantastic beach to discover with a boat !

Agios Nikolaos Andros : The Monastery of St. Nicholas in Andros was, according to tradition, built in the 8th century though it is not mentioned in any historical books until the 14th century. This monastery has an elaborate architectural structure, including a bell tower and complex arches completed during the recent restoration of the monastery in 1760.
The monastery houses wonderful frescoes and an architecturally superb wooden screen. The Byzantine icon of Panagia Blachernae, donated in the 15th-century by the monastery in Constantinople of the same name, is still kept in here, known in Greece as the Panagia of Andros, a miraculous myrrh-bearing and scented icon of the Virgin of the Root of Jesse.
The Panagia of Andros (the "Root of Jesse") is an ancient and myrrh-streaming icon, always surrounded with a powerful sweet-spicy fragrance. Great wonders occur from this holy icon and myrrh streams from it endlessly. There are even reports that people have been resurrected from the dead through the miracle-working icon.
Agios Nikolaos Andros: There is also an ancient icon of the Virgin Mary that has significantly changed its facial expression over the last few years. The authorship has turned exceedingly sorrowful and tears have been flowing from her eyes. In 1999, this icon cried unceasingly coinciding with the bombardment of Serbia at that time.
The monastery also houses the icon of St. Nicholas, and some of his relics; the icon was authored by a nun named Leondia who wove her own hair into the icon. According to the locals of this metropolis, this icon is the most active in the entire of Andros.
